“Fem-tastic! Describes Sacramento’s Queer, Activist, and
Feminist Folk-Country-Bluegrass-Rock singer/songwriter Roberta Chevrette.
Roberta, a mere 24 years old, has accomplished much in the last few years
including releasing two full length CDs that have earned the attention of
listeners both locally and nationally and even as far as Germany and abroad. Her
first CD “Woman Mother, Earth, Sky” was released in March of 2004 followed by a
second release just a year later “Miss America.” It’s hard to believe that
Chevrette has only been performing music for three years.
“Can you hear this?” begins with a powerful message; “there’s a war going on, a
war going on, does anybody understand, does anybody think it’s wrong, there’s a
war going on” and continues “yeah sometimes I just feel so powerless, cuz I know
my vote deosn’t count for shit, and I wonder what happened to democracy, cuz I
know this isn’t it, how did a man without a clue become the president?”
Her song “Indulge” begins with “I’d like to indulge myself in secret pleasures,
I’d like to taste you on my lips, I’d like to explore every detail of your body,
the curve of your breasts, the lines of your hips….” Chevrette’s bold and
no-apology style is attractive to say the least.
She is backed by Ken Burnett on mandolin and harmonies and John Bellizia on
banjo and percussion, although you might catch her solo. Chevrette’s shared the
stage at local folk festivals that featured poet/singer Utah Phillips,
Sacramento’s Jackie Greene as well as many local and touring artists.
You can catch Roberta performing locally Oct 19th at The Art Foundry Gallery.
